What embassies and consulates can do for you
Your country's embassy (the diplomatic mission) and consulates (the citizen-services offices) are part of the network that serves you. They can: issue and renew passports and national ID cards; register births, marriages and deaths; notarise and legalise documents; help you vote in your home country's elections; contact you or your family if you are arrested, hospitalised or die in the UK; and issue emergency travel documents.
They cannot: interfere in UK legal processes, get you out of custody, pay your bills or fines, give you UK immigration advice, or force a UK institution to change a decision. For those, the UK-side routes on When rights go wrong are the right doors.
Before you visit: almost all consular services need an appointment booked online, and details change. This directory was checked in July 2026 against the FCDO's London Diplomatic List and embassy websites — but always confirm the address, hours and booking process on the embassy's own site before travelling. The EU also runs an official consular protection finder.
